Spelman Celebrates 30 Years of Black Women’s Art in Atlanta
ATLANTA — Black women’s creativity takes center stage at Spelman College this fall through Between Here & Infinity: Celebrating 30 Years of the Spelman College Art Collection, an anniversary exhibition drawn from the college’s permanent holdings.
The presentation features nearly 70 works by Black women artists. Following its September opening at the Bank of America Gallery in the Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation & the Arts, the exhibition expanded into the gallery at the Camille Olivia Hanks Cosby Academic Center in early October.
A collection with room for many voices
The exhibition brings together painting, photography, sculpture, textiles and mixed media. It is curated by Dr. Chaunesti Webb-Johnson with curatorial graduate assistant Lizette London and support from Jewell Green Design.
Its focus on Black women’s lived experiences offers a meaningful invitation to Atlanta audiences: consider who creates art, whose work institutions preserve, and how a collection can carry memory across generations.
Make it a cultural outing
The museum is free and open to the public. Consult its official visitor guidance for hours, gallery locations and any scheduling changes before going.
Try spending extra time with one work rather than rushing through every room. Read its label, notice the materials, and discuss what stands out. A thoughtful visit can begin with a simple question: what does this artist help me see differently?
