ATLANTA — Atlanta’s Westside marked another step toward new housing on October 8, 2026, when city and community leaders broke ground on the second phase of the former Bowen Homes redevelopment.

The phase calls for 112 homes. Local reporting identifies 69 as affordable housing and another 10 as workforce housing, with the remaining homes offered at market rates.

A name that carries a legacy

Named Ariel Place at Bowen, the phase honors Ariel Serena Hedges Bowen, a Black musician and educator. That connection gives the housing story a cultural dimension: a neighborhood’s next chapter can also preserve the name of someone whose contributions deserve remembrance.

Progress to follow

A groundbreaking marks the start of a construction chapter, rather than an announcement that homes are ready to occupy. Readers interested in housing should watch Atlanta Housing’s official updates for completion dates, eligibility requirements and any future leasing information.

For residents, useful questions include how affordability will be maintained, what support will help families navigate applications, and how former residents will stay informed. Those details deserve continued attention as the project moves forward.
