Five Star Senior Living celebrates Black History Month

WHAT:             The Palms of Lake Spivey, Five Star Senior Living’s community in Jonesboro, GA, is celebrating Black History Month while honoring the remarkable residents (and their stories) that have shaped the fabric of our nation. In addition to empowering community-based events throughout February, the location shines light on a beloved resident, Ms. Leola Ivey, whose life is a powerful testament to resilience, courage and the enduring spirit of activism.

Ms. Leola’s story isn’t defined by the constraints of segregation, but rather by her active

role in fighting for change. In 1963, she courageously joined Martin Luther King Jr. and

fellow activists, including Andrew Young, to march for civil rights in Macon, GA. Born

and raised in Georgia during a time when segregation was a harsh reality, Ms. Leola

witnessed the deep divisions of her community. She remembers a time when the water

fountains were divided—one for black patrons and one for white patrons—a symbol of

the inequality that permeated every part of life.

The Palms of Lake Spivey reflect on the significant milestones of the civil rights

movement by honoring Ms. Leola Ivey for her pivotal role in history and by hosting

events all month long for residents. Ms. Leola Spivey and community staff members are

available for interviews.
