Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson passes away at 59

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson passed away Sunday evening at the age of 59 due to complications from pancreatic cancer. Thompson announced in March he was suffering from stage four pancreatic cancer.

Thompson’s office issued the following statement:

“Thompson often said ‘We’re in the people business,’ and it was this unwavering conviction that defined his servant-based leadership. Bruce led from the heart with a relentless spirit, setting him apart as a leader who truly understood the heart of our state.”

Thompson began serving in the Georgia State Senate in 2013, representing District 14. As Senator, he served as Chairman of the Science & Technology Committee. He also served on the Veterans and Homeland Security Committee, and the Economic Development and Tourism Committee.

“Bruce was a passionate voice for what he believed in throughout his years of service to the people of Georgia,” said Georgia Governor Brian Kemp. “We are thankful for that commitment to our state and, like so many others, have been inspired by the strength and courage he showed over the past year in his fight against cancer.”

Thompson was elected to become Georgia’s Labor Commissioner in 2022 and was sworn in on January 12, 2023. When Thompson announced his cancer spread to his liver, he did not take a hiatus from his duties.

“I join all Georgians in mourning the passing of Commissioner Bruce Thompson,” said U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff in a statement. “I send my deepest condolences to his wife, Becky, his children, and his friends. May Bruce Thompson’s memory be a blessing.”

Governor Kemp will appoint a successor that will serve out the remainder of Thompson’s term until 2027.

“Jan and I are heartbroken to hear that Commissioner Bruce Thompson passed away earlier today,” said Georgia Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones in a statement. “I had the honor of serving in the Senate with Bruce for several years and enjoyed getting to know him. He served his constituents well and always followed the word of the Lord.”
