Black History Month events happening across metro Atlanta

Black History Month is being celebrated all month long with a wide array of activities and events across metro Atlanta. We’ve rounded up a few not to miss.
High Museum of Art
The exhibition “Sonya Clark: We Are Each Other” is on view through Feb. 18. For 30 years, the multidisciplinary artist has focused her work on the African diaspora in the United States to confront, elucidate, and reframe its history. From Feb. 16 to May 12, “Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina” will feature 60 ceramic objects created by enslaved African Americans in Edgefield, South Carolina, in the decades before the Civil War. National Center for Civil and Human Rights
The center in Downtown Atlanta will be hosting Black History Month programs including by the group Giwayen Mata on Feb. 3, screenings of the film “Space Race,” book signings, and much more. See the full schedule of events at this link.
Savannah College of Art and Design
Join members of the SCAD Bee Sharps, the university’s elite vocal ensemble and American Idol winner and SCAD alum Candice Glover for “BAM!, Black Artists in Music” on Feb. 16 in Savannah and Feb. 23 in Atlanta. This year’s shows will also include stars of stage and screen including Tituss Burgess (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and “Moulin Rouge”), Solea Pfeiffer (“Hadestown” and “Almost Famous”), and Brandon Victor Dixon (“Hamilton” and NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar”). Atlanta History Center
Livingston Lecture featuring Michele Norris in conversation with Tayari Jones is Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the Buckhead museum. The Peabody Award–winning journalist will discuss her book “Our Hidden Conversations: What Americans Really Think About Race and Identity.” Get tickets and details here.
DeKalb County Public Library
The library system will host an array of programs and events to commemorate Black History Month. The theme for 2024 is “African Americans and the Arts.” Highlights of the month include performances by Bright Star Touring Theater on Feb. 3 at Scott Candler Library and Wesley Chapel-William C Brown Library; Underground Railroad Quilt Codes on Feb. 13 at Northlake-Barbara Loar Library; Make An African Print Pillow on Feb. 13 at Embry Hills Library; and Celebrating African American Cuisine at Northlake on Feb. 29. DAKORO Exhibition at Sandy Springs City Hall
An exhibit of the artwork of DAKORO Edwards at City Hall kicks off Black History Month in Sandy Springs. The artwork in the exhibit pays homage to Sandy Springs businesses, organizations, and schools that have made a significant impact in the community. Find out more at this link.
Smyrna Black History Celebration Dinner
The Smyrna community is celebrating Black History Month with a Celebration Dinner with Dr. Daniel Black, author of the novel, Don’t Cry for Me. The dinner will be held Friday, Feb. 23, at 5:30 p.m. at Smyrna Community Center, 1250 Powder Springs St. Tickets are $20 each and reserved tables with priority seating are $200. Children’s Museum of Atlanta
The Museum celebrates the impact of Black innovators and artists through its February programming. Little visionaries are called to design unique fashions, get jazzy with music from Coltrane and create collages, sculptures, and planets. They can also join the Museum to hear stories about inspirational African American women and inventions that have shaped the lives of people around the world. The King Center
The center has created a digital experience called “Black History Is Now!” ffeaturing a series of graphics and educational items about living Black activists, influencers, creatives, strategists, and business leaders. You can access the experience here.
